Everything You Need To Know
Answers about Walkabout Carriers, Pathfinder, Trailblazer, BoomCube, comfort, batteries, shipping, assembly, payment options, and more.
What are Walkabout Carriers?
Walkabout Carriers are marching-style carrier harnesses designed specifically for electronic musical instruments and DJ controllers.
They create a safe, stable platform so performers can connect wirelessly and experience true freedom of mobility during live performance.
Looks heavy. How much do they weigh?
The carriers are made of aircraft aluminum and are surprisingly light.
This is the weight with batteries where applicable, before the weight of the intended instrument or controller.
What are they made out of? Is it plastic?
All Walkabout Carriers are made from aircraft-quality aluminum, making them lightweight and built to last.
They use high-grade hardware including PEM self-clinching fasteners, black oxide washers, lock nuts, and rust-resistant components.
Walkabout Carriers are designed for long-term use, with some carriers still in use by F. Scott Bunnell High School in Stratford, CT since 1999.
How are they painted? Is it spray lacquer?
Walkabout Carriers are powder coated for a scratch-resistant, resilient finish.
The standard finish is matte black with a slight texture that absorbs light and resembles the black plastic housings found on many electronic instruments and controllers.
Custom colors, school colors, team colors, brand colors, and specialty finishes are available at an additional cost, typically ranging from a few hundred dollars to around $1,000 depending on color complexity.
Are the carriers comfortable to wear for long periods of time?
Yes. Walkabout Carriers are surprisingly lightweight and comfortable for most performers.
Many people say they can hardly tell they are wearing the carrier itself, only the controller. The goal is to make live performance as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
How much weight can they carry?
Walkabout Carriers are overbuilt for most electronic musical instruments and controllers.
Most EMIs and controllers weigh around 10–12 pounds, which the carriers can handle with ease. The bigger question is usually how much the performer is willing to carry.
What is the foam padding made out of?
The foam padding is a blend of neoprene and EPDM rubber, giving a balance of comfort and support.
Founder’s Edition carriers include 3/4-inch shoulder padding and 1-inch tummy pad and belly plate padding where slightly firmer support is needed.
What is the difference between the Pathfinder and Trailblazer Carriers?
Quick answer: Internal batteries use the Pathfinder. AC adapter-powered gear uses the Trailblazer.
Pathfinder: Designed for electronic instruments and DJ controllers with internal battery power, including portable keyboards, synthesizers, rhythm machines, and DJ controllers.
Trailblazer: Designed for electronic instruments and controllers that require an AC adapter, using an onboard battery and inverter power supply.
What is the Pathfinder Carrier?
The Pathfinder is for electronic instruments and DJ controllers with internal batteries or built-in rechargeable batteries.
It comes with a standard 10-inch by 12-inch shelf bracket and is fully adjustable for the performer’s body and playing position.
The Pathfinder is made from aircraft-quality aluminum, weighs about 7 pounds, and comes standard in matte black. Custom colors are available.
Are there any accessories available for the Pathfinder?
Yes. A variety of mounting shelf brackets are available depending on the size and shape of the instrument or controller.
The standard shelf is 10 inches deep by 12 inches wide and can accommodate keyboards, rhythm machines, DJ controllers, and more.
What is the Top Tier Bracket Set?
The Top Tier Bracket Set allows you to add a second shelf for an additional instrument, drum machine, laptop, or tablet.
The set includes five brackets that attach to the underside of any shelf bracket with provided hardware. It offers a wide range of adjustability so the second device can be positioned above and around the main instrument.
How do you attach instruments and controllers to the shelf brackets?
Most keyboards, synths, rhythm machines, and DJ controllers are attached with Velcro.
When used properly, Velcro provides powerful holding force while still allowing the instrument to be gently removed when necessary.
“Guitar straps are for guitars. Walkabout Carriers are for everything else.”
What is the Trailblazer Carrier?
The Trailblazer has an onboard battery and inverter power supply for instruments and controllers that require an AC adapter.
It is ideal for high-end synthesizers, electronic percussion, and DJ controllers that need wall-style power while performing wirelessly.
What mounting brackets are available for the Trailblazer?
- Universal mounting bracket for Alesis, Yamaha, and similar electronic multipad percussion controllers.
- Roland mounting bracket for Roland electronic percussion controllers.
- Alternate Mode mounting bracket for MalletKat electronic percussion controllers.
What are the two Trailblazer configurations?
- Trailblazer: For multipad controllers played with sticks or mallets, positioned farther from the body.
- Stacked Rack Trailblazer: For electronic hand percussion controllers, especially the Roland HPD “HandSonic” series, positioned closest to the body.
What comes with the Trailblazer Toolkit?
Each Trailblazer includes the Toolkit free.
- Two 12-volt rechargeable non-lithium batteries
- Battery charger
- Battery tester
- Adjustment tools
- Toolbox for storage and transportation
How does the sound get to the PA?
Walkabout Carriers are intended to be used with wireless systems to eliminate restrictive cables for both power and audio.
Wireless gives guitarists, singers, and other musicians freedom of movement. Walkabout Carriers bring that same freedom to electronic musicians, percussionists, and DJs.
Can I just use it with a guitar cable?
Walkabout recommends not using a guitar cable because it defeats the purpose of the carrier and removes the freedom of movement.
It can also create a safety issue if someone trips, slips, or gets tangled in the cable during a performance.
How long do the batteries last?
Battery life depends on the instrument, controller, wireless system, volume, and performance style.
Trailblazer batteries are rated between 5 and 6 amp hours and may provide enough power for a brief set or up to 3–4 hours of performance before swapping batteries.
The BoomCube typically provides 2–3 hours of performance time depending on how much energy is required.
How long do the batteries take to charge?
Trailblazer batteries can take a few hours to recharge to a usable level, but overnight charging is best. The included charger is safe for overnight use.
BoomCube batteries charge faster with the higher amp-hour charger. A usable charge can be achieved in about an hour, although that may not be a full charge.
How much is shipping?
Walkabout Carriers currently offers free shipping within the lower 48 states in the USA.
For other locations, shipping can be arranged through available package delivery services. International shipping often uses USPS because it is usually less expensive than major carriers.
International orders may pass through customs and may require tariffs or import duties upon delivery.
Seems kind of expensive for a marching carrier.
Walkabout Carriers are based on marching drum carriers, but they are designed specifically for electronic musical instruments and DJs.
They offer adjustability that regular marching drum carriers do not, including vertical and horizontal placement and playing-angle adjustment.
The Pathfinder also folds for easier transportation and storage. Walkabout Carriers are a system of parts designed to create a custom carrier harness for performing musicians and DJs.
Do I have to put it together? Is assembly required?
There may be minor assembly required, but Walkabout Carriers arrive mostly preassembled.
PDF guides are emailed to help with assembly, and User Guide PDFs are also available on the website.
Do you sell other products like controllers and wireless systems?
Walkabout is developing relationships with other manufacturers that are mutually supportive and beneficial.
At this time, products are not yet bundled with other products, but that is part of the plan moving forward.
Can I try them out at a local music store?
Not yet. Walkabout is scaling production and looking to build retailer relationships across the country and around the world.
Customers are encouraged to share where they typically buy music gear so Walkabout knows where to build retail relationships.
Can I rent a carrier?
Not yet. Walkabout is not currently set up to rent the carriers.
Can I pay over time?
Yes. With the new payment system, customers can purchase the product, take delivery, begin performing, and make affordable payments that match their budget requirements.
